While we were there climbers descended having been to the top that morning. Stuff that.
Flag at half mast due to loss of life in Afghanistan
Prairie dogs in nearby fields.
The next step was a little town called Hulett. Bikes where flooding in as we were close to Sturgis. Bike Week there sees about 500,000 bikers descend into Sturgis.
It was getting hotter again. Lots of tacky T shirt stalls etc. We couldn't find much to hold our interest after a few minutes. Others stayed and enjoyed the vibe for quite awhile.
Lots of badges and T shirts with deliberately un "PC" themes
We where intending to go into Sturgis as a group but we somehow got split up. We rode in with Gary and Barbara.
Basically it was bedlam. A traffic jam of major city proportions caused by motorbikes. The Harley's air cooled motor delivered copious quantities of super hearted air to my thighs and torso as we stop/started our way into the town. The day was already hot to our Wellington sensibilities.
We got the thrill of riding into the most famous bike rally, got the photo and got out about half an hour later. Phew.
Lots of women ride barely covered.
Patriotism runs deeps
Bar overflowing. The whole town is overflowing
A sense of humour
Gerry at Broken Spoke bar in Sturgis
The hot ride back
We then visited the local Harley dealer and picked up a jacket to give Gerry maximum airflow and a new wet weather jacket for Mark.
The dealership was huge and fair pumping.
A couple of tired Kiwis found their hotel room at about 5.45.
We will be sharing with traveling companions Roger and Robyn as we stay in Rapid City for the next four nights as room rates here are exorbitant during bike week. Tomorrow we intend exploring the surrounding area by motorcycle.
Hey great to see you made it to the biggest bike bonanza in the west. A wee tip; when out riding in the Black hills and riding the needles highway ride it from south to north that way you get to see Mt Rushmore through the tunnels and also less traffic moving in that direction. Go get your fill of Harley rumble ......(: I see you are riding with no helmits eh haa!!!!

ReplyDeleteBeing black would make it really easy to find. Lucky it's a Harley will make it even easer. Does the rolling thunder come with hail??? (Harley thunder) sooooo much of it.
