Kanab to Grand Canyon

7.15am and we roared into life. Gary and Barbara joined us again as we trundled down the road towards Arizona which is only a couple of miles away from Kanab. We could spend forever in little towns like Kanab.

It was cool still due to the early hour and the further south we have been travelling the later the sun has been rising.

Crossing the state line meant turning our clocks back an hour, so we left at 7.15am and a few minutes later we where travelling at 6.25am.

Excitement levels rose as seeing the Grand Canyon was eagerly anticipated.   It was only about an hour away.

Arizona was initially desert then a bit of forested hill. We made a bee line for the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.  The ride was pleasant but compared to the drama of the previous few weeks was hard to get excited about.  Having said that if you where riding this at home you'd think you where in heaven.

Before too long we where at the Canyon. We walked to the viewing area. Great excitement!

Then we saw it. What a fizzer! fire smoke had filled the canyon and we couldn't see a bloody thing.

Hang dog look

Smoke cleared here for a viewing
Oh well all you can do is laugh about it.  We shot back and caught up with Ken, Jan and Murray 50 miles up the road.

We headed for the South Rim which meant crossing some Arizona desert.

.The desert was interesting for an hour or so then we hit a particularly desolate area. It was devoid of anything redeeming. We hadn't struck this before because the route has been so well put together.

This was like the moon. The moon with Indians plonked there after their lands had been stolen and they where given this wasteland instead.

It was getting hot now but not unbearable. When we reached the South Rim a great surprise, the Canyon was visible now. Yeah!

We arrived into our little cabin in the Grand Canyon Village. Mark fell deep asleep and Gerry went out on a recce. She saw a 12 pointer elk grazing on the side of the road, but didn't have the camera.

Another full on day.
